Accessibility Statement

Alf's Cycles is committed to making this website accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of ability or technology.

Our commitment

We want everyone who visits this website to feel welcome and to be able to use it effectively. We have designed and built this site with accessibility as a priority, following the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, targeting Level AA conformance.

What we have done

  • Keyboard navigation: All pages can be navigated using a keyboard alone. A "Skip to main content" link is provided at the top of every page.
  • Screen reader support: We use semantic HTML5 elements, ARIA landmark roles, and descriptive aria-label attributes throughout the site.
  • Active page indication: The current page link in navigation includes aria-current="page" to inform screen reader users of their location.
  • Colour contrast: Text and interactive elements meet or exceed the WCAG 2.1 AA minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against their backgrounds.
  • Clickable area size: All interactive elements — links, buttons, and menu items — have a minimum touch/click target size of 44×44px in line with WCAG 2.5.5.
  • Responsive design: The site is fully responsive, working on screens from 320px wide upward, and is tested at multiple viewport widths.
  • Image optimisation: All images use modern WebP format with descriptive alt attributes. Decorative elements are marked aria-hidden="true".
  • Live region: The shop open/closed status indicator uses aria-live="polite" so updates are announced to assistive technologies without interrupting the user.
  • Meaningful focus indicators: All focusable elements have a clearly visible focus ring for keyboard users.
  • Reduced motion: Animations respect the user's prefers-reduced-motion system preference.
  • Font sizing: Base font sizes are set in relative units (rem), respecting user browser preferences.
  • Table markup: The opening hours table uses proper <th scope="row"> headers to convey structure to screen readers.

Known limitations

The embedded Google Map on the Find Us page is provided by a third party and may not be fully accessible. If you need directions or address information in an alternative format, please visit our Find Us page where the address and phone number are also provided in plain text.

This website is built with PHP (server-side includes), HTML5, CSS3, and vanilla JavaScript. It has been tested in the following browsers:

  • Google Chrome (latest)
  • Mozilla Firefox (latest)
  • Microsoft Edge (latest)
  • Safari on iOS (latest)

It has also been tested with VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, and NVDA on Windows.

Formal compliance status

This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. "Partially conformant" means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard (primarily the third-party map embed noted above).
